Savoring the sweet and fleeting moments- that’s my lineage. What’s your lineage?
At the end of the school year, it always feels like a mad dash to the finish line: from parent-teacher conferences to award ceremonies to filling out forms for day camp, there’s so much to think about.
And before you know it- the kids are at home all day again, and I’m just not ready for it! Spring blows through so quickly that it’s easy to forget some of the details in the process of getting ready.
And while sometimes their sleeping in all day or the “I’m bored” comments get to me, it’s also the summers that remind me of who we are as a family. Lazy days at the beach. Trips to the pool. Sleepovers with their friends. Family movie nights.
It’s these moments I hope they remember when they get older, because I know they’ll be the memories I cling to, as well. I always make an effort to snap as many pictures as I can over the summer. Because it really does go by in the blink of an eye, right? And suddenly we’re back to school shopping as I think about how another year’s gone by and they are entering another grade level.
It’s in these busy seasons that we are most likely to pass down our lineage to our kids- what we believe, why we believe it, and the values that drive our lives. And if you think back on your own summer memories, it’s probably those little details that jump out to you. It might not be the big splashy vacation. It could be Friday night pizza parties on the couch. Or sitting at the drive-in, swatting away the bugs. This will be what carries us- and our children- forward.
Sometimes the days feel long, but the seasons blow by before I have a chance to savor the moment. I hope you’ve got plans for a family vacation or get togethers schedule for the summer.
